Sheep Creek Geological Loop

This spectacular drive offers an impressive array of goelogical phenomenon packed into a relatively small amount of space. The loop is easily found, just a few miles south of Manila. It passes through the Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Area, nearly 3,600 acres of land set aside by the U.S. Forest Service in the 1960’s.

“More than a billion years of geologic history are showcased within the geological area, from rocks deposited in an ancient rift system in which the landscape was likely stark and barren of visible life to the classic faults and folds of the Laramide orogeny that uplifted
the Uinta Mountains about 70 to 40 million years ago.” *
